An Elegant Entry

Instead of fighting the darkness in the entry hall of a New York apartment, designer Daniel Sachs played it up with Benjamin Moore's moody Knoxville Gray. Antiques from four countries — an Italian mirror, an Indian painting, a Flemish table, and a Swedish chandelier — create a richly layered atmosphere in the small space. John Robshaw dhurrie.

Sachs opened up a typically tiny New York bathroom by brick-laying large marble tiles from floor to ceiling. Shower curtain, Aleta's Mughal Garden.

Toy Collection Display

To display an 8-year-old boy's toy collection, Sachs inset shelves into his bedroom walls and lined them with turquoise billiard cloth. The twin Indian-inspired headboards and bed frames are by John Robshaw.

Dramatic Dining Room

Francesco Clemente's dramatic watercolors dominate the dining room, and John Robshaw's silver Indian chairs encircling the antique French lacquer table increase the theatrical quotient. Seat cushions are in Vaison linen by Nicole Fabre, trimmed in a Jim Thompson silk. Andrew Lord's sculpted bronze floor lamp is topped with a handmade paper shade. The iron-base lamp is a 17th- century candlestick with a shade in Robert Kime's India Pear.

Antique Map Wallpaper

To add character to the boys' bedroom, Sachs blew up an antique map and papered one wall. Galigai pillow fabric from Claremont.

Girl's Bedroom

"It was difficult, almost like doing boat design," says Sachs of a cramped girl's bedroom where he needed to fit a bed, a closet, a desk, and a chair. The curtains and the fabric-covered desk are in Les Indiennes' Duchesse. The slipper chair is a Sachs Lindore design, covered in Shikara by Nicholas Herbert.

Classic White Master Bedroom

Canopied in billowing 18th-century Syrian embroidery, the master bedroom's handmade Indian silver bed is the apartment's grandest romantic flourish. Its headboard is upholstered in Peter Dunham's Udaipur.

Italian Limestone Fireplace

Sachs replaced a ho-hum fireplace with an 18th-century Italian limestone surround. It's lined with antique marble animals from India. A religious painting from Rajasthan lends modern graphic appeal.
